Beyond excited, Hattie! Thank you for bringing the podcast back :) I have not had a chance to listen to the new episode yet but tomorrow is the day.
In terms of your kind offer to answer questions on anything (ish) other than the podcast, here are my sneaky tw-hree:
1. Is a degree in Journalism (or anything writing-related) a prerequisite to, say, becoming a feature writer in a newspaper or magazine? Does any writing experience count or is it fairly specific to having done the same job elsewhere?
2. While I appreciate that you may not have direct experience in this (as far as I am aware you are considering / writing a novel), it would be great if you could give some advice to anyone looking to approach literary magazines and pitch their work, e.g. short stories, non fiction, etc?
I'm so excited for the return of the pod. And also I always find the subject of your newsletter to be spookily relevant to my own life and mind. For example... currently fielding rejections from literary agents and so this little insight into a brilliant writers long journey spoke to my battered and trampled heart x
Oh no! So sorry, because I know that feels dreadful – but don't give up. Remember that having rejections under your belt is proof that you live with bravery, integrity and conviction!
[imagine bicep emoji here because I'm on my laptop] xx
'bravery, integrity, conviction, bravery, integrity, conviction!' she repeats to herself through the wishy washy tears. No, seriously, thank you Hattie. That's so kind of you and yes I am starting to feel a little better about it and able to take on board the nice things I'm hearing in rejection letters rather than just reading it as THEY HATE ME. Loving the pod, obvs xx
Delighted that your podcast is back! The ask me anything about the podcast would be really useful as I’ve been wondering if it would be useful to diversify into doing one alongside writing but not sure whether to or not...
Thank you! That is currently the most listened-to episode ever by a considerable margin – I think it must have found its way onto a James Acaster fan forum or something.
A wonderful episode! And what an amazing process - it makes so much sense.
I have a question, though a very broad one. How did you get started with the podcast? Did you go into it thinking it was going to be a series, or was it a single interview? How long did it take, and how did you develop your questions? Really, anything on how it all started.
Definitely my favourite podcast, and the single best source of book selections (other than "Chat 3 Looks 10" which is the one which put me onto yours!)
That’s great!! I’m new here so I’m excited to listen in. I feel like there is so much pressure on novelists like myself to write faster but I often think a book takes as much time as it needs!
